Wickham, 1692
Susannah Goode walked down the walkway of Wickham. She smiled and bowed her head at nearby people. She was going to meet Edward Fier again, they both loved each other so much. Edward had told his father, Benjamin Fier, the night before that he loved Susannah and wanted to marry her, but his father refused because Edward was arranged to marry a girl in Shadyside. Susannah came back to when two soldiers blocked her path and said, "Come with us." They lead her to the prison for witches. Inside she saw her mother, Martha Goode, in one of the cells with her hands tied behind her back. Susannah was suprised when the soldiers tied her hands as well and threw her in with her mother. The two soldiers then said, "You two have been claimed as witches by the town magistrate, Benjamin Fier."

It was a rainy day in the town of Wickham. Susannah Goode and her mother, Martha Goode were convicted of being witches by the town magistrate, Benjamin Fier, and his brother, Matthew Fier. Susannah's father, William, went to Matthew to plead him to let Susannah and Martha free. Matthew said that Benjamin was the only person who could stop it, but he could easily persuade him. Matthew agreed to help as long as he was paid with a large amount. At the time, the Goode family was poor and lived on a farm to make money, so they didn't have much. William gave Matthew his lifes savings and pleaded him to do his best to save his dauther and wife.

In the cell, Susannah and Martha waited after their trial. It was night and the moon as almost full. Martha had fallen asleep and Susannah was looking out the window. Then a horse whisper came from outside the window, "Susannah." When she saw the persons face she said, "Edward! Have you come to save us?" Edward hesitated. Susannah could see his dark eyes staring at her, studying her coldly. "Save you? Why would I save you?" he demanded finally, his voice as cold as his eyes. "Edward, I thoight---" said Susannah before she was cut off. "How could you betray me like this?" Edward asked, spitting the words angrily. Susannah gasped. "Betray you? Edward, I did nothing to betray you. You betrayed me. You toyed with my heart. You were engaged to be married, and yet you continued to---" "I was never engaged!" Edward insisted vehemently in a low whisper, "I was never engaged. I told my father that I was in love with you!" His voice became even more bitter, "But you betrayed me, Susannah. You betrayed me with the Evil One! You are a witch!" "No! I am innocent, Edward!" Susannah whispered fiercely, "You must believe me! You must!" He stared at her, his features set, his eyes as cold as his words, "I told you, Susannah. I revealed my feeling about you to my father. I told my father of my love for you. Do you think that knowing this, my father would put you on trial if you were innocent? Do you think my father would put me through this pain? Do you think my father would hurt me like this? Deliberaltaly hurt me by trying an innocent girl?" "Edward, your father is wrong!" Susannah shouted desperataly. His eyes narrowed. He lowered his voice to an icy whisper, "Do not speak of my father, witch. Your spell over me has ended." "Edward, no! Edward, please!' Susannah wailed. The face in th window was gone. The pale moonlight returned. Susannah sobbed quietly. Across the room her mother stirred but didn't awaken.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day was the day that Susannah and Martha were to be burned at the stake, but William believed that they were free. He went to the town square with haste as he saw the soldiers of the town bring out the two of them. William waved his hand in the air saying, "Martha! Susannah! You are free!" Then when he saw them turn away and shake their heads, he realized that something was wrong. He asked his neighbor were the Fiers were. He replied, "Didn't you hear? The Fiers fled the town early this morning. They took all of their belongings and some of others." Williams eyes widened. Martha and Susannah weren't save. His money was stolen by the Fiers. Susannah and Martha were tied to the stakes. William struggled to help them, but a few people of the town restrained him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
William Goode pressed his hands against his face. But the anguished screamed of his wife and daugherinvaded his ears. I'll hear their screams forever. Eyes closed, he could still picture their bodies twisting on the flaming staked, still seeing their melting faces, their firey hair. He hadn't realized that he was alone now. Alone with his grief. Alone with the stench of the smoke in his nostrils. Alone with the screams of his wife and daughter ringing in his ears. They burned so brightly, he thought, sobbing. They burned as bright as stars. The ground beneath him puddled with his tears.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
William finally went home. Fire flet like it was springing through his feet in every step. William moved quickly through the darknessto the back of the house. He pulled open the door that lead to his special room behind the fireplace. The tiny, secret room that Susannah and Martha had never entered. The room where the black candles were always lighted with their black flame. Whispering the ancient words of the purification ritual, William removed the scarlet hooded rode from its hiding place beneath a stack of wooden boxes and pulled it around him. William could feel the power of the robe even before her lowered the hood over his head. Bowing his head three times, William gazed around the circle or candlelight. Then he dropped onto his knees onto the dirt floor and began to chant the ancient words he knew so well. My wife and daughter were innocent, William thought bitterly as he chanted. They were innocent. But I am not. They had no knowledge of these dark arts. But I have practiced them well. Whispering the ancient dark curses, he began to scratch signs of evil on the dirt floor. He was breathing hard now, his heart pounbding in his chest. Under the sanity scarlet hood he glaredm unblinkingly at the ancient symbols he was scratching in the dirt. A grim smile formed on his trembling lips. Inncocnce died today, William Goode thought as he summoned the spirits of evil he had summoned so many times before. Inncocense died today. But my hatred will live for generations. The Fiers shall not escape me. Wherever they flee, I will be there. My family's screams shall become the Fiers' tortured screams. The fiore that burned today will not be quenched- until revenge is mine, and the Fiers burn forever in the fire of my curse! William laughed cruely into the night. He would get his revenge. He would. The curse made it that all the people of each family would stop growing at the age of 16 and they would be eternal, but they could only be killed by one of the Goodes or the Fiers. For placing this curse on another family. The same was placed on his. William took of the robe as he continued to cackle into the misty air. He left the room like it was and went to the kitchen. He stopped laughing when he saw his second child, George, still in his cradle. He had been neglected ever since Martha and Susannah were convicted. He picked up George and cradled him in his arms. Then he bitterly thought I will get my revenge!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
And thus starts the never ending fued between the Fiers and the Goodes.
